The Importance of Setting Goals in the New Year

During a recent edition of our monthly Insights With Experts series, Sonya and I discussed the importance of setting goals to make 2013 your best year yet.  Since the original call we’ve received many follow-up questions and requests for more information.

From strategic planning to goal setting, and beyond, beginning the new year with a clear head and clear focus is key to achieving your goals for 2013.  A wise person once said, “if you don’t know where the end is, how will you know when you get there?”  By taking the time to establish what your goals are for yourself, your book, business, you will be much better off than those who go carelessly threw the year, throwing a dart in the dark and hoping for huge success.

Here is a list of quick and easy tools to help you discover your purpose, create your plan and prioritize your goals for the year ahead:

  • Start with a review of the previous year.  In order to make realistic goals for yourself and your business, it’s important to acknowledge the successes, and failures, of the prior year.
  • Create a theme or mission for this year.  For Advantage, our focus for 2013 is on service and so all of our goals are in line with that.
  • Set goals that are in line with your mission, or purpose for the year.  When setting goals, make sure that they are SMART – specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.  Without these qualifiers, your goals become less concrete and you may be setting yourself up for failure, unintentionally.
  • Prioritize your goals in an order that best benefits you – some people work best by tackling the largest items first, others feel greater success checking off several small goals at once.  Whichever is your preferred method, it is important to prioritize so that you stay on point, on focus and don’t lose sight of the desired end goal.

We’d love to hear what some of your goals are!

Here’s to an incredible 2013!
