To Become a Published Author, You Need an Editor

Read these words carefully: EVERY AUTHOR NEEDS A PROFESSIONAL EDITOR

Even best-selling authors who have been on the best selling lists for years (Tom Clancy, Sandra Brown, Stephen King, etc.) have editors.  Shocked?  You shouldn’t be. That is one of the major reasons why they are on the best sellers list time and time again.  I can’t say it enough that if you want to become a published author (successfully), you better get a professional editor.  No ifs, ands or buts about it.

As the writer, you are too close to your subject matter to be objective.  That is just a fact, not an opinion.  Again, that holds true for ALL writers.  It doesn’t matter how much experience you have or how many books you have under your belt.  Never attempt to edit your own book.  Don’t try to do it for convenience or to save a little money.  It will cost you money in the long run because it will backfire.

If you send your book out into the world without having it edited by a professional editor, yes, you will became a published author, but your credibility with readers just plummeted.  If your message is not communicated well or details and attention are neglected, readers will turn away from you.  You probably just published your last book.

You need a professional editor who is trained to help you say what you want in the most effective, clear, concise and professional way possible.   There are two worlds of editing – the micro world and the macro world.

The micro world of book editing encapsulates proper grammar, perfect spelling and impeccable punctuation. Handling these types of issues is called copyediting.

The macro world of book editing includes smooth paragraph formation and chapter transitions, general tone and style, and the overall structure of the book, in addition to covering the copy edits.  Handling these types of issues is called content editing or line editing.

When you’ve worked as hard as you have to publish your own book, don’t cheat yourself.  Take the proper steps necessary and become a successful published author.  Isn’t that the whole purpose anyway?
