Press releases are the quickest and easiest ways to gain free publicity. A well constructed press release can result in numerous published articles highlighting your business and services. Yet, most press releases go unread due to uninteresting content or poor writing. Avoid having your press release slip through the cracks with these simple tips:

1. Get Their Attention and Keep It: Pitch your topic while keeping in mind that most of society does not care about the same issue. Force yourself to create an interesting angle for your release and make it as appealing as possible. Take the view of a neutral third party and get creative.

2. Eyes on the Prize: A press release is serious business. It should serve as a purposeful document with a singular goal: get contacted by a reporter. Ensure your press release falls under one of two main categories, acknowledgement or praise. Establish a clear angle.

3. Formatting. Formatting. Formatting: A typical press release should fit on a 8 1/2 -by-11 sheet of paper, but it should not fill the whole thing. Standard formatting should include the contact’s name, phone number, and email address in the top left corner. Utilize white space and keep each paragraph to four lines maximum.

4. Be Straightforward: Include your name/company name in the headline. Try to position the headline to connote a “Guess what” message. Be witty, play with words, don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. Tell the journalist what you are all about… immediately. Deliver a simple, straightforward press release, and talk directly to your audience.
